Do It Your Damn Self

Berber Soepboer
approached Michiel Schuurman in August 2008 to design the textile for a series of dresses. The COLOURING & the ASSEMBLY dresses were shown on the 7th of September in Bergeick in 'De Ploeg', a very famous textile factory. Although Michiel spent a lot of time to design over a 100 patterns and Berber worked around the clock to get the sewing and the hundreds of buttons done, the result proves the chemistry between them.

About Berber Soepboer: She especially designs clothing which can be worn in different ways, so the wearer can make choices in how to wear the cloth. According to her words “Life exists of many choices based on expectations, desire and the available time. When everything is still possible the world seems an incredible place”.She translates these endless possibilities in her design.
About Michiel Schuurman: Hestudied graphic design and typography for two years on the Koninklijke Academie voor de Beeldende Kunsten Den Haag and graduated as graphic designer in 2002 on the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam. His work is almost always about altering typography to the point where it fully replaces image. The sometimes psychedelic designs are strongly based on classic typographic laws and the pure contrast between black and white.

ASSEMBLY-DRESS
The second one is a set of three dresses that can be taken apart and combined with a button-system.

New Logo for Verizon

When it comes to cell phone providers I feel like you fall in one of two camps: iPhone users with AT&T (aka, the cool people) and Verizon users (aka, the lame people that will ask “Can you hear me now?” when they are not on their cell phone). Well, apologies for the perhaps offensive simplification of the matters but, let’s face it, Verizon has never had an ounce of cool to its name. Particularly among designers who, to my knowledge, all would rank the Verizon logo as one of the worst. And apparently Verizon has taken notice and is ready to make some identity and brand changes as it nears its first ten years in business. The logo change seems to be tied to this new campaign that revolves around the word “Very,” and while it’s not clear whether it will replace the popular “Test Man” and his army of technicians, this campaign is vastly different from anything Verizon has done. The campaign won’t launch until next July apparently, so I’m not sure how the samples I received are actually meant to be used, if they are print or banner ads or billboards or a combination of all.

The brand visuals and messaging that Verizon will use are actually kind of clever and allow for a lot of alternatives and perhaps even more customization of messages. Not sure if the “Very” graphic will stay the same all the time, if so, it might become a little too tiring after a while; it might be interesting if they did different configurations of the circles but maybe not, since the whole identity and the logo itself is so full circles. Which brings us, well, full circle to the logo, which was, oddly enough, designed by London-based design firm johnson banks
I want to like the new logo, even with its dumb “wireless cloud” nickname, simply because I detested the old one with all its angled gradients, specially as it mocked all of New York from its towering headquarters on Lower Manhattan. It is definitely much more interesting and dynamic and it is very in tune with the kind of work that johnson banks is known for — I must say that it’s nice to have an outsider design perspective on this American brand — but maybe it’s a little too soft and delicate. Overall it feels like a cohesive, and drastic, new look that should help Verizon capture some consumers from the cool camp.

N.A.S.A. Gifted

As for this “Gifted” video, it’s directed by Three Legged Legs, a group whose cartoony sci-fi style isn’t so far off from Spike Jonze’s new project. It’s a mind-bending space adventure that perfectly matches the tone and rhythm laid down by super collab Kanye West, Lykke Li and Santigold.

N.A.S.A.’s (Squeak E. and Ze “DJ Zegon” Gonzalez) record is actually all collaborations. Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon provide ambient background for vocals from an incredibly wide range of performers, including David Byrne, RZA, Tom Waits, George Clinton, Kanye West, Karen O, Santigold, Spank Rock, John Frusciante and many more. Like, very many more.

Stella Artois Ads

This is a pretty incredible new viral campaign from Stella Artois, they've recreated Die Hard, 8 Mile and 24 in the style of classic french cinema, and the results are amazing. This makes me wish that somehow Stella's advertising budget was big enough to pull these off as full length films. They really nailed the aesthetic for all of these.

Dunneeps

What do we hate Peeps! What do we love? Spending $100 for better designed peeps! Wait, no we don't. For Easter, Motorbot has turned his attention to that beacon of marshmallow goo, the iconic Peep. The Dunneeps have been a Motorbot tradition going back a couple years, and if you “peep” this thread on the Kidrobot forums, you’ll note many satisfied customers from holidays gone by. You can pick up a set of four (with box) for $100 or an individual Dunneep for $25. Both include shipping and your choice of colors: blue, pink, white, yellow, purple, green and orange.

(Oranghouse aside: I bet Maddona's kids get these in their baskets and EAT THEM!! Even that brand new one she is trying to adopt.)

Olympics for the Unemployed

Everybody loves a heart warming story about unemployed people challenging other unemployed people for a $40 gift certificate for vegetarian food. So today I proudly bring you that story. I am not however, bringing you the "heart warming" forwarded email my mother sent me entitled "it will make you cry" about a sparrow mourning his dead mate smushed in the road. You will have to look that one up on your own- or rather just click here. (Are you happy with yourself?) Ok, now on to the REAL story about human dignity and smashing piñatas with an office phone.

Registration was taken at the "Unemployment Office" for the Unemployment Olympics, which took place in Tompkins Square Park on Tuesday. The event was organized by Nick Goddard, a 26-year-old unemployed computer programmer who hatched the idea because he yearned for the chance to "battle all the unemployed people for stuff."

Events included the "You're Fired" race -- a sprint across the playground to see who would first get to the "unemployment office."

A man attempted to smash a piñata with a telephone.

Some 50 Olympians came from all over the city and beyond to participate. Christopher Dawes, an e-commerce product manager who was laid off earlier this year, tossed a phone during the competition. (I see a lot of anger directed toward phones, I wonder how much Verizon has to do with this)

An awards ceremony for the race took place atop cardboard boxes, and the winner, Alex Mermelstein, center, won a $40 gift certificate to Curly's Vegetarian Lunch on East 14th Street. Mr. Goddard, the organizer, noted that it is not a bad time to be unemployed. "There is no stigma associated with it now," he said.

See, this is a feel good story and the kind of thing you want to read while eating pop tarts and drinking your coffee. The only event I felt they lacked was the "destroying of the copier" but maybe that can be added to next years events. I only hope that all of you who clicked on the "bird snuff link" are satisfied. Who wants to cry in their pop tarts? Not me.
